November 8   Fished the Caney this morning below the steps for a couple of hours, 7:30  to 10:00 and then at Happy Hollow for an hour..No bites, didn't really see anything. mainly practice casting.  Temps was in the 70's.  Suppose to cool off next week, hopefully try again then. Until then, 

Wading with the Wilkens'

June 22, I went to the Caney with Glenn and Levi Wilkens.  Glenn and I used fly rods and Levi used a spinning rod.  Fishing was slow, I had a couple of fish on but lost both and finally caught a decent Rainbow, that was it.  This was Glenn's first time in almost 35 years, no fish but a lot of experience.  Levi tried the fly rod but stuck with the spinning rod and caught 8 at the trough before the bluffs using a split shot and worms.  It will hard to get him to try the fly rod again, I'm sure. June 4th 2019

I left work early today to take the time to go to the Caney, for the first time since last summer.  The lake has settled a little since we haven't had any rain for a couple of weeks.  I started above the steps as usual with a soft hackle with no luck. I then went to a midge again with no luck.  I then tied on a leech pattern that seemed to work pretty good.  I caught 6 in about 2 1/2 hours, a couple of browns, a couple of brooks and two rainbows.  I felt like I had a good day since last year I may not have caught that many all year.  It may be a while before I go back since I am working.  Until then, Pappy

Saturday morning, May 4th.  The lake has finally leveled off at 627 from a high of 660+. I will only have a few times to fish sporadically since I have gone back to work.  I hope to report back when I get to the river. 

No Change

I've been to the Caney three times since my last post, twice at the steps right after generation, in the afternoon with no luck.  The other time was at Happy Hollow between 11 and 1:30 before the water started rising.  Again, nothing.  I am pretty sure the fishing is slow for most of the other guys, too, even the trout magnet people because there haven't been any posts from them.  So I guess I wait awhile before I go back.  Until then, Pappy.

I have only been to the Caney 5 times due to high water and doing things here at the camp.  Common theme every time has been slow. Not many people catching anything, this shows on the website that most of the spinner fisherman are on, they ain't on there.  At least the water is cooler than last year and the yellow bass aren't there.  The Corp is keeping the sluice gates open and that helps.  That's all for now, until next time, Pappy

Bout the same

 This post is for Saturday, September 9, for the first time in almost 4 months I went back to the Caney late afternoon.  I had ridden by Saturday mid afternoon to check on the fishing conditions, hardly anyone had caught any trout at all.   I got on the water close to 5 o'clock at my usual spot above the steps and started throwing my soft hackle. The first three fish I caught were the same ole yellow bass, the water was still warm, not quite as much as in May but still warmer than normal for September.  I then started fishing mostly the center section and started catching rainbows and browns. I tied on a couple of other flies that have worked in this type of water and did OK with them also.  Today is Tuesday, we are in the after effects of hurricane Irma so hopefully after this dies down the fishing we'll get a little bit better.  It looks like the Corp will be generating 24 hours a day for the next few days to get the lake level back down, maybe after that, I'll just have to wait and see.  Until next time, Pappy
