Super Guides

 I went looking for trout three days the week of November 28, two of those days I was wading  and the third day, Friday, I was in my river hawk with a guest and followed along by a super Guide and her kayak.  The first two days were fairly typical, I was on the water for about three hours each time and caught between seven and 14 fish including three decent rainbows and one decent Brown       A couple of months ago I met a lady that had just bought a new kayak.  I told her that I would get back in touch with her towards the end of November and maybe we could go down river together, so we set up a time for Friday, December 2.   In the mean time she had gotten in touch with her friend, arguably the best guide on the Caney to go along with us. We left from the ramp a little after 10 drifted down stream on  The low-water and made it to happy Hollow close to dark around 430.   We had a great day, the weather was almost perfect and the fishing was excellent. I think we all talked enough to be satisfied, they fished the typical way with the dropper system and I fished with my sinking tip line until it got caught up in my trolling motor.   Instead of tying on another leader  I decided to try the floating line method that they were using.   Needless to say, I have a long way to go, but I think the next time that I drift on the low-water I will probably use the floating line the whole way, I need to expand my fishing knowledge.  I am hoping that we can take another trip down the river together before the weather gets too cold .
     I went out this afternoon, Monday, December 5, at the places where I normally wade and had a pretty decent afternoon. There was a misty rain most of the time so that man I pretty much had the river to myself.   I left the river part and went up around the dam and didn't have any luck at all, there was loads of fish that I could see but I just wasn't able to catch any.   Depending on the weather tomorrow I might try to get back out for a little while, I have to go to Nashville probably Wednesday to do some work for some of my kinfolk.   So, until next time, PAPPY

Fall is finally here

 Fall has finally gotten here in the two weeks since I have been back from Orlando. In those two weeks I have waded three times and have been in my river hawk once.   There has been no generation for the last three weeks at least, I was still using my soft hackle and pheasant tail and wasn't catching very many fish. My  third time out I decided to try something that probably no one else was using, a leech pattern. It work for me.  I started getting bites in the same places that I was not seeing any action. Most of the guys that were catching fish were site fishing on the Browns that were spawning and were catching some humongous Browns.  I prefer to stay away from those that are spawning especially with the lack of rain, the eggs will finally have a chance to hatch and without much generation will be able to stay alive through the winter and will make  better fishing in the future.  That is just my thought on the subject.  I took my river hawk out on Tuesday, November 28 and put in at the dam at about 230 and went down towards the steps at the nature trail where I usually wade.  I started right above the ramp on the left-hand side and went down to where I usually start wading and for an hour or so caught several browns and a few decent size rainbows.   I then moved back up in the dam area and just floated around for about an hour or so until a little after dark and had pretty much the same results, so I felt like I had a pretty good  afternoon.  We had a little bit of rain Tuesday night and during the day Wednesday while I am posting this and hopefully that will help things a little bit by cleaning up the mess on the bottom of the river.  It will mean that the generation schedule will get back to its normal 9 o'clock to 11 o'clock each day but that is fine. I hope to get out for a little while Thursday and then maybe Friday spend the whole day on the river maybe with a guest.   Until next time, Pappy.

Another Catch Up

 I have probably been to the river five or six times since my last post. The fishing is basically as it was, no great numbers and a few browns and rainbows and the 15 to 17 inch range.  I did take the river hawk up to Lancastor as the water was going down and caught a 19 inch brown on the opposite bank from where three other guys were fishing.  I have also tried fishing with the floating line and I think that once I get the hang of it I will do OK, the fishing is pretty much the same but setting the hook for me is quite a bit different .  I am in Orlando right now celebrating Presley's sixth birthday and will be back home on Friday whatever the date is and hope to be back fishing a week from today. Great Month

It has been a month since my last post mainly because the fishing on the Caney stayed pretty much the same.  The fish were still hitting soft hackles and scud type nymphs.  I went to the Madison River in W Montana the latter part of September with the Harston Bros.  The fishing wasn't near as good as it was three years ago but it was a different time of year.  We spent one day in the park hoping to catch a big brown going upstream but that didn't happen.  But, as usual, I used it as a learning experience for the Caney.  I have fished three times since getting back and have started using 20 and 22 size midges and emergers, which I haven't tried in the past.  Also, I am letting my drifts stay drifting a little longer.  I still need to have a more perpendicular casting motion,  working on that.  The numbers have decreased somewhat which makes me and others have to test our ability.  That's fine with me, I think we were all getting a little complacent.  Brett, my use to be next door neighbor is going to be here for a couple of days this week.  I hope to use the River Hawk at least one time while he is here.  I'll report how we do.  Until next time, Pappy

Several trips

 I have probably been to the river at least eight times since my last post. The reason I haven't posted anything is because the fishing is pretty much the same thing. I have fished new spots above and below happy Hollow out of my boat  and also while wading.  I have started using yellow and yellowish green semi seal leeches and also scud patterns of the same color and they are working fairly well. I have also still  been using brown and green soft Hackel when I have been in shallow water. It looks like the fishing will remain the same so I will only post when something different happens, I have caught a couple of 16 inch browns and also two or three rainbows of the same size. Fishing for the week ending September 3

 The trout  are still there and biting, but I had two different times  that I fished. Wayne and I fished one morning starting at happy Hollow at 6:15 and fished  until 1030 and had a great morning. I tried a couple of Leach patterns one that was a semi seal that Wayne let me use.  We caught probably 30 fish between us.  After that we took my River Hawke up to the dam and put in at about 1230 and floated back to happy Hollow. We stayed around the ramp and floated a little bit down to the steps and caught several fish.  We floated and fished for the next couple of hours and didn't do any good until a little after 5 o'clock and we were within 1/2 mile of happy Hollow.  We caught probably close to 15 between us and a couple that were over 13 inches long and most all of them were fat.  The other three times that I was on the river we're also good days using soft tackle and a yellowish green scud pattern  .   I spent most of Saturday afternoon tying some new leach patterns and retying some of the older ones that I had.  This is Labor Day weekend so I probably won't be out on the water until late Monday afternoon or probably even Tuesday.  So until next time, Pappy.

August 24 and 25th

 Thursday morning I met Wayne at the parking lot and we got in the water about 615. I started above the steps and had a good morning again with my green and my brown soft hackle.  The weather was perfect, the fog was there all morning until 845. I worked my flies in the middle and both sides with all three sides producing even some next to the lay down trees over on the right-hand side downstream. I think Wayne had a pretty good morning too. When the generation started we went down to happy Hollow, we should have gone home I don't think we caught but maybe one fish between us.
    Friday morning was about the same way I had a good morning, I think I caught a few on some midges in addition to my other stuff. I went to happy Hollow when the generation started and caught several fish down there,  I caught a couple of fairly decent sized rainbows.  I'm not putting a whole Lotta stuff in these because it seems that every time is about the same, same flies same amount anywhere from 10-15  to maybe 20 or more.  I did go this morning Saturday and had a great first hour from about 630 to 730. I probably caught at least 15 with some of the rainbows over 12 and a couple of Brown's that were 11 or 12".  I went to happy Hollow and fish for maybe 30 minutes and didn't catch but two and that was right before the water got there. There were a couple of guys that were flyfishing got into a hole and they probably caught 10 or 12 while I was there directly out in front of the canoe get out.  I am going to tie up several soft hackles and a few other things and maybe get back out this afternoon. 3 Trips or more

 This post will be for three trips, two for wading and the other in my river hawk. I fished with a new friend on my first trip, and to show a small world his dad used to work several years ago with the same company that i did.  We had quite a bit of rain during the morning so I left out late afternoon around 330. In a drizzle and rain I had a good afternoon, I probably called at least 10 Fish and maybe as many as 15. At happy Hollow, three times right before a thunder boom I called three good rainbow between 12 and 15 inches.  My next trip the first good day with low humidity I was on the water for nine hours again and had a great day with close to 20 fish. These great days don't compare with  early spring days of 40 or 50 fish but for 90° summer weather it is pretty good.  I have gotten to where I really enjoy my river hawk, so I have used it several times in the last three weeks and have had fairly good success. During that time I caught maybe 10 fish, one  fat rainbow that measured out at 16 inches and another a little bit smaller that Measure 12 inches, it started out a little slow up in the dam area and then picked up and I went down to the places where I usually wade,that is where I caught the big rainbow. Yesterday was probably the last comfortable day with low humidity,  I wont be fishing because tonight is church night.  I am going to try to get back out tomorrow, until next time, Pappy.    P. S.  On my last cast tonight just to straighten out my line, as I was reeling the line in, instead of stripping as usual, I caught a 12" walleye, my first ever there.

The Longest Day

 Not that today would compare with the World War II movie, but today I spent more time on the water then I have probably in three years .   I got in the water at my normal spot at 6:15 and the fishing started out very slow, it was probably 20 minutes before I got my first trout, a 14" Rainbow, so I guess it was worth the wait.  I caught four or five more with one rainbow12 inches and then the generation started at 9 o'clock.  I stopped at the big rock market and got me a tenderloin sandwich and a Dr Pepper and proceeded to happy Hollow.   My best recollection is that I caught 3 while I was there until the water started rising at 10:45. I talked to a man and his son while I was there and we decided to go to the rest area, I was there for about 30 minutes and then the water started rising and I didn't have a single bite there. I then took my time and went back up to the steps and started again around 1 o'clock.  Since they have been running the sluice gate the water was still running about 1 foot high and at a pretty good pace.  I didn't catch anything until 145 I should have known that because the river is usually dead between 12 and 130.  My first fish was a fat 12 inch rainbow and then I called a few more and went to the house at 3:30.   I probably use more flies and talk more fish on more flies than I have in a long time so there wasn't any particular pattern that was working.  I think I will take the weekend off because I am wore out. World traveling fisherman

 On Monday, August 15 I had the great pleasure of fishing with a world renowned fly fisherman  from parts unknown in the land of south Africa.   Known by everyone in the industry as Apeiwe, only one name needed  to be recognized .   He graced my presence with his benefactor, Robert buddy Harston .  He has unbelievable skills, so much so that I am not even able to describe them due to copyright restrictions that has been in effect since his career started.  I am working right now with his agent to see if I can post a photograph of the two of them and if possible it will be possibly the first photograph of this marvelous man  any where close to his fishing waters .  I am limited in the amount of words that I can use in this post so I will have to end it now. Catching up again

 I have probably been to the Caney at least five times since my last post. I have been three times in my boat and have had decent success on high water around the dam  and lower water at my usual wading places. The rainbows are still there and not as many browns, I have been using dark midges a whole lot more than I have in the last couple of years because they seem to be what the fish are wanting.  This morning, Thursday, I met Wayne at 6:30 to Wade, he stayed up around the dam because there was a threat of thunderstorms and I went on down to the steps.  It's a shame to live 20 minutes from the river on a rainy day and don't even carry a rain jacket. There was a continual rain from the time I started at 6:30 until about 8 o'clock.  The fish responded well to the rain I started with a yellow hare's ear and then switched to a message and both of them caught a 12 and 11 inch rainbow.   I called between eight and 12 fish there and then when the generators started at 9 o'clock we moved to happy Hollow and I continued to use the Midge and a soft Hackle and caught probably 10 fish there.  Getting soaking wet wasn't near as bad since the fish were biting, I am going to try to go again in the morning early for a couple of hours and I will make a report at sometime after that. River Hawke Fishing

I took the river hawk out a couple of afternoons this past week and fished with one generator running for about an hour each time.  I caught a couple of 12 inch rainbows each time, some at the waterfall and the other two over at the pool. When the generator turned off I stayed in that area and would then work my way down to where I would normally wade.  I had better luck doing this, I caught several rainbows and a couple of Browns  close to the steps on the Longbranch side.  I am still searching for the top one or two flies to fish while the generator is running, I may try to go out this afternoon, Saturday. River Hawke Afternoon

 I finally decided to take the River Hawke out while the generation what's going on. There was a threat of thunderstorms but I was in the mood to fish so I decided to take a chance. I put in at 430 and generation was until 6 o'clock I fished around the dam for 30 minutes or so and Caught a couple of 15 to 16 inch rainbows  with in the first 10 minutes and then it slowed down for the next 20 minutes. So I then travel downstream to the Cutthrough and didn't do any good  and I came back up around the dam until the generation quit. I caught three or four rainbows and one small brown around the dam and then I move back downstream while the water was still going down . I met up with a couple of guys in kayaks close to the steps from the Long Branch campsite. They had caught maybe one or two fish as I was coming down towards them.  Pleasantries were made and one of them asked what I was throwing and then told me that I should tie on a white Wooly Bugger, that they had caught two and had missed a couple and that was the best fly to use. I told them that I had caught some with my soft hackle and would probably stick with it. and the next 10 minutes I had caught six decent size rainbows while they were still trying to catch one. The girl that was kayaking with them just kind of smiled, of course while her friends weren't looking. I think by this time I had caught maybe 12 fish mostly rainbows and decided to move back up around the dam.  I caught three or four more before it got time to leave. I may take the river hawk back out this afternoon because our   Meeting starts at church Sunday through Wednesday and I won't have a chance to get out in the afternoon. Quality is better

 I got to the river a little bit late this morning and the fishing started out real slow.  I got a couple of Bites on soft hackle then I went to a crackle back and it picked up a little bit and then I changed to a black midge.  That made all the difference in the world, I haven't consistently used a midge for two or three year but that was the only thing that would work. I didn't catch a whole lot of fish but I caught two rainbows that would've been in the slot and then A couple of more that were close, the best overall morning for 2 1/2 hours that I have had in awhile as far as quality rainbows.  I hope to get out one more time this week and try it  again, until next time, Pappy.

Big Rainbow

 This was the  fifth Sunday of the month so we had an early afternoon worship. I decided to go to the Caney and got into the water at happy Hollow at a little after four.  I missed my first two fish after about the second strip and then I finally managed to catch three Brown's that were about 10 inches each. I got back up at the steps at the end of the walk path at the dam  at about 530 and the water was still going down. I caught three Browns in the first 30 minutes with a white soft Hackel and then one small brown with a hares ear.  Then change back to a soft with a yellow neck and white Hackle.  I felt a pretty strong tug at the end of my line which was out about 35 feet I set the hook and started stripping, it didn't take but a couple of strips to realize this wasn't one of the regular fish.  I stripped him and about halfway to me and he came to the top of the water and at that moment I didn't think that my 5x tippet would hold.  I gave him line  when he would turn and then would strip back when he would come back towards me. After a couple of minutes I got him close enough to get him in the net, which was a relief. It is by far the biggest rainbow that I have caught that far away from the dam.  I caught a couple more smaller Browns on the hackle and then I went to a crackle back and caught maybe five or six more decent size rainbows, by this time it was starting to get dark so I headed to the house.  This was the most exciting day by far that I have had in several outings, I will try to post a pic of the rainbow.  Until next time, Pappy.

River Hawke July 13

My daughter and two grandsons were at the cabin yesterday Wednesday, July 13 so I loaded the boys up and we went to the Caney in my River Hawke. The skies were partly cloudy and we got to the river at a few minutes before 11 o'clock, generation started at 11. This was the first time I have actually been in the river hawk while they were generating.  We started out fishing up around the dam the boys were using spinning rods and I was using my four weight flyrod, we only caught two fish both were rainbows about 12 inches long on a bead head soft hackle in it.  I tried Leach patterns but they didn't seem to work. So after about an hour or so we headed down river casting as we were going along without much luck, but we were mostly just seeing how the boat would do and the boys like the scenery.  We went to happy Hollow and even with one generation there were some areas in the river that we're still fairly shallow but we could see them out in front of us and there was no problem. We turned around and just motored  to the damn to see how long it would take and it was almost exactly 45 minutes, I thought it would take longer than that but that will be some good information to use next time I am out because with no generation there will be a whole lot of paddling if I'm going back towards the dam.  It was a great time spent with the kids and hopefully we can do it again next time they are in town from California. Another catchup post

 Today is Tuesday, July 5, 2016 and this post will probably sound a lot like  The last one. The numbers caught varied with the amount of time spent on the water.  The numbers have definitely decreased since the weather got hot. I have stayed in the same areas from above the steps down through the little pass through. I have caught as few as nine and one hour fishing up to 27 for four hours,today was the most satisfying with 22 fish but there weren't any long periods of no catches. I will probably fish two or three more times if the production levels stay the same, if anything big happens I will post that, until next time, Pappy.

Ketchup Post

 I have been fishing four times since my last post, as soon as the hot weather of June got here the fishing or catching I should say  slowed down a bunch. The first slow down I caught maybe 20 and then the next time I caught maybe 15 then 17 and this morning Saturday, June 18 I caught seven.  That's not quite as bad as it sounds, because I would only fish a couple of hours each time and this morning I fished for one hour at the nature trail steps and then moved down to happy Hollow and fish there for maybe an hour and I caught a 12 inch rainbow and of course let a decent size Brown  get away. Early morning before nine and late afternoon after five is the best time to fish plus it's not so hot and you don't have to worry about getting run over too bad with a canoe or kayak.  This morning as I was leaving the nature trail area I ran into a man and his son from Brentwood. His son, Luke, I have met before, A real nice boy that goes to Bretwood HS that knows Brett and they had a river hawk With an older motor that they were going to sale and I may get me a Father's Day gift for myself.  I will post on here if I do, until next time Pappy.

Same O same O

I went out for a couple of hours today, Tuesday after Memorial Day. The temp was almost 90 but it was down to 86 by 5:00. The very first trout I caught was a 13 1/2 " brown.  This was in the same area that I had only been catching small Browns.  I was using a new fly that I just tied and Cindy recommended that I start with it. I caught 6 of the 20 with it, until it became unusable. A red neck still seems to work best. Until next time, Pappy.

Short Sunday afternoon

Since it was the 5th Sunday of the month, we had our evening worship conducted by the young men right after our fellowship meal. That gave me a free evening to wade the Caney,  from 4:30 to 6:30. I fished a small area above the steps, the other places were taken. Pretty much the same story, the 10" Browns were still the and the ridge that held the rainbows was still there.  I caught and netted 1 slot rainbow and lost at least a couple more. I also realized that if I didn't get a hit within 3 casts, make sure my fly is still on my line. This happened 3 times after losing a bigger rainbow, each time my line had been cut.  I ended up with 19 which ain't bad for a late holiday weekend afternoon.  I still haven't decided whether to go this afternoon,Memorial Day. Finally Friday

 It is the Friday before Memorial day, so I thought I would get out and see if things were still the same . I went for a couple of hours this morning and then about an hour and a half this afternoon. I caught a total of 46, I finally decided to take my counter to see if I have been catching as many as I thought I was.   The bight was still on,  this morning I fish for about a total of 30 yards below the steps and caught 29 mostly small Brown's a few 11 inch browns and a few rainbows.   This afternoon, I couldn't set the hook. I lost five I had of the first eight that I hooked.  I changed from a hare's ear to a pheasant tail and that made most of the difference, I still missed a few but the hook set was a whole lot better.  I caught seven rainbows that were between 11 and 13 inches long, and of course the big one or two got away. I'm going to try to post a picture of the flies that I used today, they are in pretty rough shape so I will have to make a few more. Until next time, Pappy

Four day report

 I haven't posted anything for the last three days that I have finished because they have all been about the sign .  The small Brown's anywhere from 7 to 10 inches long are still anywhere from 30 yards above the steps all the way down almost to the Bluffs.   I went twice today Thursday the 26th this morning for about one and a half hours I caught between 30 and 40 mostly the small Brown's a couple of browns over 12 inches.  This afternoon was a different story, I started at about 430 and finish till 630 the Browns were 11-12 inches long and I got into some rainbows there were 13 14 inches long and fat.  I went a little further up river from the steps because everywhere below that there were people fishing and I wouldn't going to be there that long anyhow. I'm still mostly using soft hackle, this afternoon I changed to a hare's ear and a prince nymph. The generation schedule an early-morning is great for me because it lets the water get low enough that I can fish from bank to bank some of the other people don't like it but it suits me just fine.  Until next time, Pappy.

Cloudy morning, they are still there

I went out this morning, Wednesday, from 1030 to 1230.  we have had some rain this morning early quite a bit of cloud cover as I was fishing. Doubleheader

 Monday, May 16, I went to the Caney in the morning from 930 to 1130 and then again in the afternoon from 430 to 6 o'clock.   As I got to the steps, I saw that a few fish were rising down below the steps on the far side of the river.  I still had a SCUD type fly tied on from the time before, so I used it. I mediately started catching fish and as I walk down they seem to be getting bigger, the first few were small browns like the time before and then I started getting into some  larger rainbows, probably for the next hour or so I caught 15 or 20 browns and rainbows and then I hit a dry spell for about 45 minutes and then caught a few more and decided it was time to go home. I got a phone call from Cindy as I was leaving and realize that my phone had gotten wet even through the protector and my phone would not work.  So I spent the afternoon trying to get my phone back in working order and finally Monday night it was working again. They're On

 This report is for Thursday, May 12. The fish are there, most of them are small Brown's but you can catch as many as you want to. I started out above the steps throwing again  A soft taco and probably cock Tanner 12 within the first hour and then I move downstream to see if they were anywhere else.  I went below where most of the spin fisherman fish and the trenches not near as deep as it used to be so it's fairly flat so there were quite a few small browns in there are probably caught another 10 or 15 in less than an hour. I then moved to the pass-through where  there has been very little activity over the last couple of months and they were there again, now I'm starting to get into some larger rainbows some were shallow and some were out in the middle.  Probably another 15 or call, I'm swapping between a soft taco and it's good looking number 16 most everything had either some red or orange color to it .   While I was here the guy had that I've seen before had a couple guys with him they were catching some so I swapped to lay off fly I didn't want to catch any while they were there. They moved down to the tree line where I was headed so I asked if it was OK if I fished down in front of them since they had gotten out of their boat and he said yes thanks for being courteous.  He had his two guys thrown across the stream and let it drift, that's the way he and most everybody else fishes down through there. So i did my normal thing thrown down stream and strip and back up and was catching several. I would kind a turnaround every once in a while to see their reaction and  One of his guys had started throwing down strain the same as I was and he started catching some.  My friend Wayne was fishing down around the Bluffs and he came back up where I was and we were both tired enough to be ready to leave.  He had had a good morning. He showed me a picture of a 16 inch brown that was nice. It was about time for the generations start so we both walked out.  In the parking lot I saw another friend that I fished with quite a bit, he had stayed up around the dam and he said he had caught so many he couldn't keep count either so I guess the stockers are all over the place maybe they will stay around and grow a little bit.  Today is Friday the 13th I just now realized so I guess I will stay in and do some stuff around here at the house sun is shining beautifully with a little breeze blowing so it's a beautiful day here in silverpoint, until next time, Pappy.

Tuesday May 10

 I got to the Caney at about 615 Tuesday morning and right off I knew it was going to be a good morning  if the rain would hold off.   There were a few fish rising above the steps so that's where I started. On the third cast I started catching and getting several hits.   The bad thing was I only caught one and had eight more hits that I couldn't get stripped in. I changed to A soft Hackel number 16 with a Gamagatsu hook and that made a difference I started getting the fish to the net probably five or six and then it happened.I had a heavy tug on my line I set the hook and a huge rainbow started coming towards me and passed me and started up stream,  this hasn't happened to me ever on the Caney so I failed to let out any line and guess what he broke off where my tip pit connects own to my leader. I have no idea how exactly big it was the only surfaced one time but it was a big rainbow.  I was sick for the next couple three minutes tied own more Tippit and a new fly and got back started caught three more and then the rains came and I decided that was enough for maybe an hour or little more.   I am posting this Wednesday morning around 9 o'clock thinking about getting back out but it's real cloudy and it looks like a storm might be coming in so I will let you know if I got out today, until next time, Pappy.

Thursday, April 28, fishing may be started to get hot

 I got to the Caney today around 230 in the afternoon and fish above the steps where no one else was. There were only three or four people left because the generation had been off since 7 o'clock this morning. So I have started where no one else was and that was the spot to be, I caught13 within a couple of hours most of them were anywhere from 10 to 13 inches and  all were  rainbows.  Before the generation started, I was wanting to try happy hollow since I hadn't  finished there since last fall.  I am sure glad that I did, the best hour and a half that I have ever had there.on the light side of an estimate, I caught 30 fish and maybe closer to 40 and they were 99% small browns and a couple of decent size rainbows.  They were all over the place, if I was standing in 3 feet of water I could see them swimming by.  I don't know if they had just stocked in that area  but the river was full of them.  Hopefully I will get a chance to go back sometime next week and see if they are still there, until then, Pappy.

2 Beautiful Days

this report is for April 17 and April 18. Sunday afternoon between worship services I waded the Caney for a couple of hours and caught six nice sized trout. Three rainbows were 12 to 14 inches long and one brown 16 1/2.  That was the best day I have had and several trips, then I went out this morning Monday and had another decent day.  That was the best day I have had and several trips, then I went out this morning Monday and had another decent day  I finished again for a couple of hours and caught three nice size rainbows and one small brown.  Yesterday, it same like white with yellow head was the color and this morning that didn't work until after the sun came up good and I added a little flash and that seem to do the trick   It is still a little slow overall the water is low and the other guys out there aren't catching very many fish either, but it can only get better.    Until next time, Pappy.

Bang the drums slowly

 Yes, I know this is a weird title for a fly fishing blog but the Caney was loaded with drum yesterday, Friday, April 15 2016 .The weather was beautiful all day I got in the water at about 230 and the river was still flowing a foot or so high.   There was only one other fly fisherman in the water and we only had maybe one hit Each while we were there.   I guess it is still a little early in the spring for the fishing to really turn on, but I'm really looking forward to that time. So far it has been real slow this year.   So until next time, Pappy.

Still slow

 I went out for a couple of hours on the 29th and 30th of March, fishing for all was still real slow.  I covered the same areas that I have for the last couple of times just to see if the fish had come back and  two or three others that usually fish above and below me weren't having any luck either. It's still another two or three weeks before the fishing should really get hot so until then I will continue to   tie flies and find something that will work. Until then, Pappy.

3 Zeros

I fish a couple of hours each day for 3 days this past week, March 15-March 19th.  Maybe 2 bites grand total for the 3 days, so not going to be much of a post.  I tried 4 or 5 different types of flies that usually work and none did.  Hopefully when the weather gets a little more stable the fishing will get a little bit better.  I know it's still early, so it will get better.  Until next time, Pappy.

Finally fishing. Today, Sunday March 13th 2016 , is the first chance to fish since last October.  I got out and fished about 3 hours between worship services.  The weather was cloudy with a few drizzles.  The fishing was fairly consistant.  I caught 14, all rainbows, with the last 3 coming above the steps.  They were by far the longest and fatest and fought the hardest.  I'll try to get a picture posted on here.  Hopefully, the generation schedule will stay fairly consistant and we can fish at least a couple of times a week.  I'll try to stay a little more current with my posts this year.  Until next time, Pappy

Today is Tuesday February 16, I had a nice report for the rest of 2015 ready to publish and then I must have hit the delete button because it is gone.  Basically, 2015 was a down year as far as fishing was concerned.  Socially, it was a great year.  I became friends with my hair stylist, Cindy, and we started seeing each other and I taught her 29 year old son the fine art of casting/fishing.  Cindy also tied a couple of flies that I used and caught a few rainbows on them.  As I said earlier, 2015 was kinda slow and 2016 is starting out the same way.  The generators have been running constantly due to the heavy rains.  Like yesterday, Center Hill almost down to 632 elevation, when they usually stop the constant generation.  Then, all day rains and even thru the night the lake will probably rise 8 to 10 feet so probably no wading until March. I will make a report as soon as I get back on the water.  Until that time, Pappy.
