Sat. 4/25;15

There was a 4 hour window to wade this morning so I took advantage of it along with 4 or 5 other fisherman.  Again, after 5 days generation, it took me a while to find the right fly for the right spot.I caught 4 in the first hour or so in the first 30 yards of wading the river.  I then moved quickly from their  through the next 30 yards until a found a run that  held bigger fish last year, the bigger fish were still here, I think waiting for stuff to fall out of the trees.  This was about a 40 yard stretch, I spent the rest of my time wading here and ended up with a total of 22, about the same amount of browns as rainbows, no brookies.  The rainbows overall were larger than the browns.  That's all I have for now, maybe    May 2 Saturday I'll be back on the water.  Until then, Pappy.

Nice Saturday morning 4/19/15

  I got a phone call Friday night from my original fishing buddy, Wayne, wanting to meet me early Saturday morning at the Caney since the generation was cut off until 9 a m.  We met in the parking lot and got in the river close to 6:30.  Wayne found his spot and I waded to my area and started throwing my red headed green nymph, after a few casts I was getting hits but couldn't get the hook set I needed.  I then went to another nymph but with a Gamagatsu hook.  What a difference!  After about 2 hours I had netted 32 trout with only 2 or 3 misses.  I did change flies but stuck with the Gama hooks.  My best was a 15' Rainbow and a Brown that was just a little bit shorter.  Wayne also had a good morning catching close to 30.  We use the same technique so that wasn't a surprise.   
Now I have to load up on some more hooks and wait on a generation schedule that is conducive to wading.  Until next time, Pappy.

April 7

This post is for April 7.  The weather wasn't very promising, cloudy skies with rain in the forecast.  There was a two hour window to wade between generations and since I only live 20 minutes to the Caney I decided to take a chance on not getting in the storm.  As I figured, there was no one else at the River so I could roam as much as I  wanted to.  It took a few minutes to catch anything, even though they were rising some.  Midges weren't working, BHPT not working, Woolly Bugger not working so I finally tried a fly that has no name to no one but me.  BAM, that's what they were waiting for.  Over the next 30 minutes, I caught 6 nice rainbows and 1 17" Brown, plus a few that I lost as soon as I started stripping. So not a bad day, the rains eventually came later so thanks to all of you that did not visit the Caney today.  Until next time, Pappy

High Water Wading

This post is for Thursday March 19th, the first time in over a month that the generators at Center Hill Dam have been turned off.  The schedule said 0 generators from 8 a m until 1 p m.  That would leave about 3 hours to wade, it usually takes about an hour and a half for the water to slow down enough to wade after the generators are turned off.  This particular morning they decided to run the sluice gates during this time.  That allowed for over 3000 cfs through the dam as opposed to 0 - 250 cfs. Not real conducive for wading.  My trout magnet friend drove up from Brentwood so we decided to try to at least get in the water.  I found a couple of places close to the dam ramp that the trees wouldn't interfere with the backcast.  I ended up with 4 trout on the line and getting three of those to the net.  Two were 14-15 inches and one was 10".   My friend only caught 2.  So, all in all, it wasn't a bad hour and a half for fishing.  The lake is still about 8 feet above what the Corp wants while the dam is still being repaired so it may by another month or so before anyone can get back on the Caney.  If it is sooner, I hope to be there and will give a report.  Until next time, Pappy.

New Blog for 2015

Since I have changed email addresses since last year, I can't find my old setup so I will begin a new blog.  Today's post will cover 3 days of flyfishing since my last time out on December 24th.  My first outing of the year was Wednesday Feb. 4, then again on Saturday 7th and today, Sunday 8th.  Wednesday was ok for one hour to fish between generations. Three fish that were between 12 and 14 inches, 2 rainbows and one brown.  Saturday was a search day.  No one on the river was catching anything.  I only caught 1 rainbow in the first 14 minutes on the river and that was in the lead for the day amongst us flyfishermen.  Today wasn't much better,  Four fish in 4 hours.  I know I haven't given much detail but all three days were basically the same, several flies were tried and no specific one was working.  I covered a whole lot of water and just couldn't find any spots.  I blame that on the amount of water that has been coming thru the dam for the last six weeks and has changed the riverbed just like it did last year during this time. I took until April for the fish to get acclimated to their new homes.  So maybe it will be deja vu all over again.  Until next time, Pappy
